A true pioneer, Anna Mae Hays started as an Army nurse, serving in malaria-infested jungles during World War II, and went on to pioneer the service's nurse corps and became the U.S military's first female general. Hays retired from the Army in 1971 after making history when she became the first woman to be promoted to brigadier general on June 11, 1970. Hays passed away on January 7 this year of complications from a heart attack.
